Root canal treatment is needed for two main reasons: When the pulp, known as blood or nerve supply of the tooth, is inflected through damage or decay. If the pulp is untreated, the infection may spread out through the root canal system of the tooth. This eventually leads to an abscess. If the root canal system is still not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be extracted.

Root Canal Procedure: The main treatment is to take out all infections from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to protect for further infection. Root canal treatment needs time-consuming so that most treatment may complete two or more visits to your dentist. First, your dentist will numb the area around the tooth. You also may receive sedation, such as nitrous oxide. Dentist will make a hole in the top or back of your tooth to get to the pulp chamber. He or she will remove some of the diseased pulp. Your dentist then will clean out the diseased pulp with an antiseptic solution. For root canal treatment to be effective, all the canals within the tooth must be cleaned. Generally, the top front teeth have one canal, the bottom front teeth one or two canals, the premolars one or two, and the molars three or four canals. Once the canals have been thoroughly cleaned and dentist has made sure that the infection has been removed, the roots are filled. A temporary filling is then placed to cover the new root filling. The crown of the tooth should then be restored with a permanent filling or crown within a relatively short time. After Root Canal Treatment, Your tooth will be sore for two to three days after the procedure, and your dentist will tell you to avoid chewing on the food especially hard food. Advantage: Pain is always associated with root canals, but it should actually be little to no pain during the process. The infect will only get worse with time if it left untreated. The biggest advantage is that the tooth will not need to be extracted in the future. Disadvantage: Not often, but sometimes infected tissue is pushed through the ends of the root, which will infect the gum. This is easily treated, but is also painful until the infection is cleared up. Canals are irregularly shaped, and if the canal is not accurately measured or branches of the canal were not discovered, it cannot be completely cleaned or filled requiring the procedure to be done again when this area becomes infected. |
