Dental veneers sometimes call tooth veneers, are a thin shell made out of porcelain or composite material. They are custom made that design to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth to change their color, shape, size or length. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than composite veneers and better reflecting the light of your natural teeth. But composite veneers are thinner and require removal of less of the tooth surface before placement. You will need to discuss the best choice of  veneer material for you with your dentist. The most common causes the discolorations of teeth are coffee, tea, and cigarette. People who also drink significant amounts of soft drinks can meet similar staining. Dental veneers are the suitable for the people
  • crooked tooth
  • discolored teeth
  •  chipped teeth
  •  they can be used to cover spaces in between the teeth

Dental Veneers procedure:

During first appointment your dentist will examine your teeth to make sure dental veneers are appropriate for you and discuss what the process will involve. Dentist also may take x-rays of your mouth and teeth.  Your dentist removes about ½ millimeter or 1 millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface. Before trimming off the enamel, your dentist will give the local anesthetic to numb the area. Next, your dentist will make a model of your tooth, and sent out to a dental laboratory. It approximately takes one to two weeks for your dentist to receive the veneers back from the laboratory. Before the dental veneer is permanently place to your tooth, temporary veneers will be placed until permanent veneers are ready. Your dentist will repeatedly remove and trim the veneer as needed to achieve the proper fit. Next, your tooth will be cleaned and polished. Your dentist places the veneers with water on the teeth to verify their perfect fit and the color which the tooth allows for a strong bonding process.  Once properly position on the tooth, your dentist will apply a special light beam to the dental veneer, which activates chemicals in the cement causing it to cure very quickly. The final steps, evaluating your bite and making any final adjustments in the veneer as necessary. Your dentist may ask you to return for a follow-up visit in a couple of weeks to check how your gums are responding to your veneer and to once again examine the veneer's placement.

Advantages:   Typically veneers are difficult to stain, and strong and very durable, veneers last from ten to fifteen years. Veneers are  done in only one or two appointments, and can actually strengthen your tooth. There is no additional maintenance, other than a follow-up visit to your dentist and proper brushing and flossing on a daily basis.

Disadvantages:  It takes a week or two to get used to your teeth that have been changed in color, size, spacing and shape.  There are situations where more tooth must be removed which increases the risk of trauma to the tooth. The amount of tooth to be removed for the veneers should be discussed with your dentist ahead.  If you suffer from grinding of your teeth, speak to dentist about this problem because veneers can be damaged, chipped or cracked from this.
